This is a walk from "50 Walks in Brecon Beacons & South Wales" (AA, ISBN: 978-0-7495-7480-2).

You can climb Sugarloaf from the car park going straight up the main path to the summit and then straight back down again. A bit boring an obvious - as well as the most popular route.

This walk takes a more circumspect approach to the summit which is much more interesting and also means that the walk is circular rather than the same up and back. The approach gives more views up into the surrounding hills (700m isn't really a mountain is it?) and also down into the valleys.

The day we walked was misting rain with periods of sunshine, which provided atmospheric periods of mist/clouds over Sugarloaf and beyond. There were enough sunny periods to provide views over Abervagenny and the surrounds.

The access road is slightly hair raising with blind corners on a single lane road. Also the return to Brecon Road and the right hand turn onto Brecon Road to head away from Abervagenny was tricky - we had someone get out of the car and watch for traffic on Brecon Road.

TO TOP

There is a direct path to the top from here - at least according to my map. However, the track that goes around and then up to the summit is much simpler.

There is a small stream to cross here.
