Rutebeskrivelse
This is a linear tour from Shelf to Bailiff Bridge and it follows parts of the Bronte Way and the Calderdale Way. Shelf is reached from Leeds by the #508 bus (and the bus stop is right by the start of the hike), while I returned to Leeds from Bailiff Bridge using the X63 to Bradford and then the X6 from Bradford to Leeds.
Its highlights are the two waterfalls that you will find, both of which are reasonably accessible for photography; the first is broad, whilst the second has a large drop.
The trek starts down the tarmacced Bridle Stile which runs next to Shelf Hall Park; Bridle Stile after a while becomes a farm track. When you reach the farm, go towards the farm but cross the stile to the left of the farm. The track across the field is in the direction that you have come but diagonally down to the trees. Eventually, you will hear the sound of rushing water and soon be able to see the first waterfall of the tour.
The route goes over a little wooden bridge next to the waterfall. It is reasonably easy to scramble down the bank to get photos of it. There is then a climb up stone steps and at the top you turn right keeping in the wood.
Where path branches always take the right hand fork. After the last branch the path leads to another waterfall – this is higher than the previous one, but the bank is harder to get down. I decided to do it another time when it might be less muddy. You will need to retrace your footsteps back to the last fork and take that path.
Emerging from the wood, climb up across the field. After crossing it you come to hedge where path appears to be on both sides - take left-hand path which is signalled by a yellow flash on a post.
Eventually the path brings you to the houses at Norwood Green, where there is a fine clock-tower. Keep the houses on your left and the green on your right and you will see the path you need to take leading off from the green. This path leads to Rookes Hall and so on to the A58. This is a busy road, but there is a pavement which you follow for about a third of a mile before turning off to the left through a stone wall.
The route is then by the edge of a golf course before entering a small wood and going under a railway viaduct. A couple of fields are then crossed before you reach Lightcliffe.
When you come to the end of the field, near the houses, exit the field by climbing over metal wall-barrier, go past the house and then take the path signposted left. This leads down across a field and crosses Bottom Hall Beck before gradually rising to the A641 where there is a bus-stop at the end of the path for you to catch the bus back.
There are two stiles to cross.
