We had breakfast at the bar VIRTUDES in Frigiliana (in the middle between the new and the old part of town). There is parking and a public bus stop nearby.
From there the track descents steeply on the road to the river bed (follow the sign that says "Río Higuerón"). Then you just follow the river as far as you like and return the same way.
The path can be divided in three segments: first you walk on a gravel road or smaller paths. Then you walk on a wide gravel river bed. Then (my favorite part) you hike along the narrow, small and picturesque river Higuerón, which gets narrower along the way.
In this third part you often have to cross the river by hopping over stones. Canyoning sandals might be a good idea in the wet season.
If you have canyoning sandals, if there is less water, or if you don't mind wet shoes, you can continue your hike along the river even further than we did. We did this hike in October 2016 with regular hiking shoes, which we managed to keep dry till the end.
ALTERNATIVE STARTING POINT:
Alternatively you can drive with a 4 wheel drive (4x4) up to the picnic area (área recreativa) with several big wooden picnic tables and water, which is about a third of the way, and park your vehicle there. You can also park before that near the water reservoir. I would however not recommend doing that with a regular car.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE BACK:
At about 3/4ths of the way you can follow the acequia (levada) back to the reservoir above Frigiliana (see waypoint). See also Wikiloc description by Carlos Todoterreno (in Spanish). He calls for ATTENTION: you need to walk on the rim of the open levada, with steep descents into the valley -- 20m straight down in some parts, where you might want to walk inside the water carrying levada.
