Milarepa and the Pigeon
"The danger of anger is on its way."
When you meet with enticing wealth,
Keep watch upon yourself and be alert;
Keep a check upon yourself:
"The danger of craving is on its way."
Should hurtful, insulting words come to your ears,
Keep watch upon yourself and be alert,
And so remind yourself:
"Hurtful sounds are but delusions of the ear."
When you associate with your friends,
Watch carefully and warn yourself:
"Let not jealousy in my heart arise."
When you are plied with services and offerings,
Be alert and warn yourself:
"Let me beware, lest pride should spring up
in my heart."
At all times, in every way, keep watch upon
yourself.
At all times try to conquer the evil thoughts
within you!
Whatever you may meet in your daily doings,~
You should contemplate its void and
illusory nature.
Were even one hundred saints and scholars
gathered here,
More than this they could not say.
May you all be happy and prosperous!
May you all, with joyful hearts,
Devote yourselves to the practice of the Dharma!

The maidens of Heaven were all very happy, and in their delight
and satisfaction they again turned their bodies into pigeons, and flew
up toward Heaven. Milarepa then ate the offered rice, and set out
for the Gray Rock Vajra Enclosure.

Obeisance to all Gurus
T HE Jetsun Milarepa, having arrived at the Gray Rock Vajra Enclo-
sure, stayed in a state of inspiration at the Saddle Cave.
Now there was a Tantric yogi at Gu Tang who had heard the
preaching of the Jetsun, and became imbued with a deep faith in him.
[Coming] to Milarepa, he said, "Revered One, although I have prac-
ticed meditation for some time, I have not had the experiences or
earned the merits [that should have resulted]. This is probably due
to my ignorance of the proper way to practice. Pray, be kind enough
to grant me the appropriate teachings!" Milarepa replied, "In that
case, it is necessary that you should know all the essential points."
Therefore he sang for him a song, "The Six Essentials":
The manifestations of mind outnumber the
myriads of dust-motes
In the infinite rays of sunlight;
The lord-like Yogi knows
The self-nature of these manifestations.
The reality of the true nature of beings
Is neither produced by cause nor by conditions;
'Qle lord-like Yogi knows
The sole truth precisely and positively.
Even when he is faced with the threat
of a hundred spears,
His thorough-knowing View will not be shaken;
Thus the lord-like Yogi naturally subdues
all attachments.
