Sulfur Wadi Hike - Fujairah Adventures
The trail is located in Dahir - Fujairah, on the way from RAK to Dibba nearby the very famous "Rainbow Valley" (Spectrum) hiking area.
Its an easy to moderate level hike with the attraction of some sulfur pools and caves.
You can park your car (Sedan accessible) about 150 meters nearby the main road. And then walk through the trail which starts from the parking area. It will take you down to the wadi in about 200 meters. From here you can see the small water pools for about 1km.
After the first km, the wadi is almost dry (in rainy season you can expect more water content). You can also see some trees and flowers (Nerium Oleander ?) even if its dry.
Another things you will notice (once the wadi becomes dry) are the caves in the mountains.. there are a number of caves, different in size.. You have to climb the mountain if you want to explore it..
You can just walk for another 1km and come back if you are looking for an easy hike (total 4-5km), or proceed to do the full loop which will be 8+ kilometres.
There are some intersection points in which you can see arrow mark for direction. The walk through the dry wadi is not that boring, the rocks are polished (cz of the water flow) and there are some dry ponds which are nicely shaped and deep. Once it is rainy season, it will be difficult to do the full loop since bypassing the wadi / pools will be bit tricky.
At 6.2 km, the wadi is going to the right side but you have to deviate from it and go straight instead, we went on the right side (This deviation made an additional 2km) and it was full of sudden drops / edges.. some are about 4m deep.. we managed to pass them all (some are like jumping) but ended up seeing a deep edge (like a suicide point) in which it is impossible to go further without rope. We had to come all the way back (as you can see in the trail) and then took the right way (Way point 4) to get back to the trail.
So remember to continue straight at 6.2nd km instead of following the wadi (which is going to the right side).
After walking about 700m, you have to pass a dam area and then proceed further walking though another wadi which will lead you to an of road path. This road will lead you to the starting point. There are some sulfur pools also towards the end of the trail.
Points to note:
- Mobile network is not always available
- Some points are tricky as the wadi is going in one direction but the trail is actually the other direction
- Most of the areas are exposed to sun. Even if it’s an easy+ hike, keep enough water / electrolytes according to the climate
- Water presence in wadi / pools depends on rain / season
- Check the pools and ensure it is safe before getting into it
