Rutebeskrivelse

Another trail following a classic mountain pass, the Gotthard

Shoes with good grip important, poles optional but they help on way up.

Net running time was 2h 53 mins (the difference to the Wikiloc time are stops). Schweizmobil app (more accurate than the mobile phone GPS) suggests 25.25km and 1100 metres of climb, as well as a suggested walking time of 7 hrs 45 min).

Run starts in Airolo train station. The path up to the Gotthard pass is a steep single trail. The walking distance is much shorter than the actual road (so is the incline).

From Airolo you start in a nice forest until you reach the mainly tree-less area around Val Tremola.

The path is always close to the road but over 80% of the run is actual trail. There are a couple of small stretches where you go into the road.

From Airolo to Gotthard is essentially a hike or at best a fast hike.

From the Gotthard down to Hospental and Andermatt you will run in a valley tracking the Gotthardreuss stream.

Once in Andermatt you may want to continue to Göschenen as there are more train connections there.

You will follow the path along the Schöllenen gorge, past Teufelsbrucke, and it is easily runnable down to Göschenen.

There are improvement works being carried out (as of July 2017) to the section down to Göschenen so pay attention to the new sections.

Whilst the run is fairly uncomplicated there is quite a bit of history to the paths so its worthwhile reading a little about the history of the Gotthard Pass route.
